- “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”
- Be a good girl
- Don’t argue with your elders
- Wait your turn
- Remember your manners
- Be considerate
- Don’t be self-absorbed
My mom made sure her kids would be a credit to her whether she was present or not, and she did a damn fine job of it. I skim the social conventions of life while raising nary a ripple.
So, I’ve been wondering lately, who am I? And, just as importantly, what am I about? How can I have strong and authentic feelings if I’m carrying a strong but unarticulated sense that my opinion is the last one to matter.
Today a lightbulb dinged above my head. I’m going to actually use this blog that I’ve been sitting on for the best part of two years. I’m going to speak, and have opinions, and occasionally even forget my manners and argue with my elders.
And if there’s nobody here to listen then that’s okay. I’m doing this for me.
